Yesterday I followed a tutorial by Maria Ginzburg on how to paint a monochromatic landscape in watercolor. Ended up with this piece:
Where Brownies Tread (2009)
Returning to an old drawing, editing and starting to color it, here is the latest WiP (ArtRage):
New week and I'll start with another celebrity sketch for the Sketchstorm thread. Johnny Depp, from a scene in "Sleepy Hollow" (pencil, HB):
Johnny Depp Sketch (2009)
A pen sketch that was supposed to look like Catherine Zeta-Jones (from a scene in "Traffic") but that I managed to mess up along the way. Anyway, it was a fun challenge.
As an exercise suggested in a workshop in the ImagineFX forum, I'm doing a master study of Millais beautiful painting "Sound of many waters". Millais was one of the artists belonging to the Pre-Raphaelite school of painting. The exercise is to try and reproduce a Pre-Raphaelite master work as well as you can, in order to gain a more thorough understanding of its composition, color palette used etc.
Here is the original:
And here is a WiP of my digital chalk (ArtRage) version of the painting. So far I've been using chalk sizes from 100-10% to establish the big overall shapes and color patterns before moving into more and more detail.
Today I had the urge to do another totally improvised painting - this time using acrylics instead of the computer.
Here is the final result:
Infinite Waves (2009)
Size: 25x37 centimeters
Just another quick ballpoint sketch of a desert environment for the Sketchstorm thread over at the ImagineFX forum.
Starting off the new week with a ballpoint sketch from a marvellous
Geoff Taylor book cover. I have seen and admired his art for a long time now, but not until today I found out who was the artist behind it. Can definitely recommend a visit to his website if you like jawdropping epic fantasy art - or wolves (not just the hunting ones, one of his paintings is actually of two cute, sleeping wolf cubs), another of Geoff's specialties. Equally impressive of course.
Anyway here's a study of a detail from one of his paintings:
A ballpoint pen sketch of an eagle that I did for a sketch thread at
ImagineFX:
A quick still life study of an apple from three different viewpoints (ballpoint):
Yesterday I finished painting the entry I've
been working on for the September challenge at the
ImagineFX site.
The theme was "The City" and here is one of its less prolific citizens:
(Done in ArtRage and Photoshop)
A Paltry Excuse (2009)
Have done another master study - this time from a painting by Fragonard:
Fragonard study (2009)
I have been asked to do some images for cards that will be used in a fantasy board game. The first concept I'm working on is an evil tree. Here is my first version of it:
Today I felt like painting a wholly improvised piece in ArtRage 2,5. Here is what it ended up looking like:

Relationship (2009)
Today's assignment in a sketch thread over at the
ImagineFX forum was to draw "your favorite musician". I picked the drummer from Dream Theater, one of my favorite bands: Mike Portnoy

New month means new monthly challenge at the
ImagineFX site. The theme this month is "The city". At first I thought about painting another environmental piece, with a huge city built upon the slopes of a huge mountain.
But then I decided to go in the opposite direction and portray one of the cities inhabitants. One of the unfortunate ones that we tend to rush by and look as little as possible at: A beggar. The latest WiP of my old, begging woman looks like this. After making a rough sketch I have blocked in the colors and begun rendering the face (ArtRage 2,5):

Last night I finished another drawing for an online study thread at
conceptart.org. The was to draw an athlete and I chose to do a female martial artist:

Latest WiP of a figure drawing I'm doing from a Marconi photo reference (pencil, HB):

After about an hours digital painting from a photo reference this was the result. Sketch of an old barn for the newly started "Sketchstorm" thread over at the
ImagineFX forum.
